Once upon a time, being a designer meant investing in a few quality tools and slowly building your portfolio. Now? It’s a never-ending subscription cycle.
Every time I open my MacBook (which I paid $3,000 for), here’s what’s running in the background:
- Adobe Creative Cloud – required. Always updating. Never owned.
- Canva Pro – great for clients and content batching. $120/year.
- CapCut Pro – yes, I love it. Yes, it’s another monthly fee.
- ChatGPT Plus – I use it for scripting, SEO, captions, code. $20/month.
- Font licenses, mockups, Creative Market goodies – sometimes $50/week depending on client needs.
- Dropbox, Google Workspace, Squarespace, Shopify, Zoom, Loom…
- Courses and education – because staying relevant is part of the job.
And that’s not even touching hardware:
iPads, Apple Pencils, AirPods, backup SSDs, tripod stands, lighting kits. I’m basically running a small media agency out of my home studio.
Here’s what’s wild though: many companies no longer reimburse for any of this. What used to be part of your creative tools budget is now considered “personal.” So designers are left to foot the bill while also managing tighter deadlines, leaner teams, and higher creative standards.
And yet… something’s shifting.
More consumers are buying with care, not volume. There’s a return to intentional storytelling, slow branding, and meaningful design. I love this new direction. But it still leaves creatives trying to reconcile two things:
- How do I slow down without falling behind?
- How do I invest wisely in tools without becoming an overconsuming creative machine?
So I’m opening it up to the design community:
🛠️ What tools, subscriptions, or investments do you actually use every month?
🧾 What’s been worth it—software, hardware, education, legal, etc?
💸 What’s your silent budget category no one warns you about?
Because behind every beautiful brand, there’s an invisible budget.
And behind every designer, there’s an entire infrastructure—built with our own money, energy, and creative stamina.
Let’s make it transparent.
Let’s make it sustainable.
